Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day with us March 21st!

Here at the Palmetto Weekend, we have a calendar showing all of the special days throughout the year.

There is a bacon day, pencil day, chocolate covered raisin day, a special day for just about anything you can think of, and we share those on our site fairly often.

Today I want to be a little bit selfish and share a special day with all of my fellow Palmetto Weekenders….

Two and a half years ago my wife and I found out our first child would have a 99% chance of being born with down syndrome.

We were scared, for a moment, but quickly decided our baby was going to be awesome no matter what his diagnosis!

(spoiler alert: he is awesome.)

People with down syndrome are doing amazing things all over the world, and we wanted to take this opportunity to share some of them.

This little boy just landed a modeling contract with OshKosh B’Gosh.

This young woman is the first person with Down Syndrome to complete the Austin Marathon.

My favorite… Sam and Mattie, two young men with down syndrome produced their own film, and it’s gotten national recognition.

The list could go on and on, there are people with down syndrome that have PhDs, own businesses, Angela Bachiller is even a city official in her hometown in Spain.

Celebrate with us in recognition of World Down Syndrome day by wearing mismatched socks or even extra socks, to signify the extra chromosome people with down syndrome rock so well! Or, wear the official colors of down syndrome awareness, yellow and blue.
