A Great Day on the Lake with the Children at Homeless No More SC

It's amazing what can happen when a community comes together to help those in need!

Any day on the lake is a great day, but today we spent our day on the lake with Ken Jones, owner of Aquafun Boat Rentals and Tours, and a group of children from Columbia’s Homeless No More program and it was so much more than great!

Ken has been raising money for these children through his Wacky Wednesday lake parties over the last few months and, today, he was able to treat these kids whose families are transitioning out of homelessness with the help of the Homeless No More Program to an all-expense paid day of fun on Lake Murray.

We met Ken and the group of children and leaders from Homeless No More at Jake’s Landing Marina and took a boat ride out to Bundrick Island’s Sandy Beach. Many of the children with us today have never been to the lake or had the opportunity to even ride on a boat. All of them were extremely excited just for the boat ride, but Mr. Jones had much more in store for the day.

Shortly after arriving at the beach, Lake Murray’s only floating water park, the Jungle Float, came into view. Thanks to donations from Ken and the Lake Murray community, the kids were able to swim out and go crazy on the Jungle Float’s water slide, diving board, rope swing, and trampolines.  After working up an appetite on the Jungle Float, the children were treated to hot dogs, chips, and watermelon for lunch.  To round the day out, our friends with the Brew Dawg Boat showed up with free ice cream for everyone.

Today’s fun was not only a reminder of how lucky we are to be able to have homes to live in but also of how the kindness of a community can make life just a little bit better for families that are struggling. We think every kid deserves the chance to just be a kid and today these weren’t “at-risk” kids these were just great kids having a great time on a great day and the people that came together to make that happen truly are great people.

Ken and the Lake Murray community aren’t done yet. They are still raising money to provide Homeless No More SC with help to get these children ready to go back to school this fall.  Head over to Aquafun Boat Rentals and Tour’s Facebook page here if you would like to contribute and check out Homeless No More SC’s page to learn more about the great work they are doing in our community to help families transition out of homelessness.
