How to get a free or discounted ride on New Year’s Eve

No matter how you decide to safely travel to and from your New Year’s Eve parties, make sure you don’t spend more than you have to!

If you’re out and about, you’ll need a safe ride home. Here are some ways from to save on trips for New Year’s Eve 2018-2019.

Rideshare services

Lyft: New users can get $15 off their first two rides. Note that, even with the discount, your New Year’s Eve ride could be pricey, due to high demand. Existing users can earn free rides by referring friends. Select “Free Rides” in the app to get a referral code and invite friends to join. After someone you refer takes a ride, you’ll receive a ride credit.

Uber: Use this code to get $15 off your first ride (for new customers only).

Credit cards with rideshare benefits

Certain credit cards can help you get free rides or discounts with rideshare services. If you have one of these cards, your New Year’s Eve or Day ride could be free:

Uber Visa Card from Barclays: This card lets you earn bonus cash back on various purchases, including 2% back on Uber rides. So, that expensive ride home may hurt a bit less if you know you’re earning cash back. Or, use points you’ve already earned and redeem them as Uber credits directly in the Uber app. If you have enough points in the bank, your New Year’s Uber ride could be free. The Uber Visa card has no annual fee.

Platinum Card from American Express: The card (which has a $550 annual fee and benefits) offers an annual $200 Uber credit (which breaks down to $15 per month and $35 in December). With $35 to use in December, you could make a considerable dent in your Dec. 31 ride to your New Year’s Eve destination.

Cards that earn general travel rewards points or cash back: If seeing a surprisingly high rideshare charge on Jan. 1 sends you into a panic, you may be able to mitigate some of the damage by using existing credit card rewards you’ve accumulated to cancel out the charge. Several travel rewards cards let you earn generic “points” that you can use toward travel expenses (including rideshare charges). Or, if you have a cash-back card, just redeem enough cash back to pay for the ride.
